This resonates on many levels. A sense of home and belonging has eluded me for much of my life. I have been evicted, made homeless on multiple occasions. But even when I have had somewhere to live, I still longed for a home I never seemed to be able to find. My outer circumstances may be different, but my sense of displacement strums a similar chord.
It set me up to really recognise those few places and people that feel like home when I found them. But all suffering is tough to go through in the moment. I’m not sure all mine made me stronger, but it has definitely made me wiser!
Reading backwards (from the top of your stack down) going from shield to quilt, from protection to comfort, actually resonated more than if i had gone 1->5 (my own idiosyncrasy, I’m sure). I very much enjoy the way you’ve assembled these pieces and am enjoying even more being able to emotionally snack on them across my morning
"building a bridge to yourself. Coping Tool: Home-in-a-Box, It’s a way of anchoring identity in things we can name and touch. It’s a way of saying, This matters. This shaped me." Reading this I feel reassured about my relationship to carting objects around the world through multiple moves (and feel sad that I lost the shellacked pebbles I collected one summer from the beach at Rhode Island). We need both bridges and roots .... roots by definition are very tangible ... bridges possibly more metaphorical, but as identity is fluid, in all of us, the bridges help keep the roots meaningful, alive, and connected to the tree which is ourself.
Really enjoying these posts!

Thanks for sharing! That must have been very difficult to experience.

Yes, I agree. We need both roots and bridges.
